The grim reaper is the personification of death who wears a hooded cloak and wields a large scythe. His job is to collect souls when their time on earth is complete. It's thought that the personification of death known as the grim reaper originated in the 14th century during the Black Death, Europe's worst pandemic. Since that time, artists have used the grim reaper's likeness to capture our imagination and symbolize death. Famous examples include Gustave Dore's black and white "The Vision of Death on a Pale Horse" and Evelyn De Morgan's religious "The Angel of Death, 1890." To incorporate the grim reaper into your artworks, look for giclee prints, art prints, and poster prints that call to you.
