Canvas Transfer FAQ

Canvas transfer of family photo, hanging in a kitchen as room decor.

What is a canvas transfer?

A canvas transfer is a print or poster image that has been transferred and fixed to a canvas surface.

How is a canvas transfer made?

A paper poster or print is coated with a special film that lifts the image from the paper. The film, with the embedded image, is heat-sealed to the canvas surface. The image is now part of the canvas, taking on the texture of the canvas surface. The whole piece is given a clear UV protective coating and stretched over a wooden framework.

What type of canvas are the images transferred to?

The printed images are transferred to a 12 oz textured canvas.

What is meant by the term 'stretched canvas'?

Stretched canvas refers to a canvas that has been mounted onto a stretcher bar support framework in preparation for framing or hanging. These are the same frameworks that artists use to stretch canvases for original canvas art.

What is the purpose of the hole in the paper on the back of my canvas frame? Is my frame damaged?

No, your frame is not damaged. The paper backing is added for a professional, finished look. For ventilation purposes, rectangular holes are cut in the top of each frame. This helps to prevent mildew from forming on the back of the canvas which would eventually cause the ink to crack or peel from the front side of the canvas.

How is a canvas transfer different than a regular poster or print?

Canvas transfer art offers an elegant way to preserve your poster or art print. The canvas transfer process gives your artwork additional durability. The protective varnish helps prevent fading and water damage.

Why does it take longer to get my canvas transfer than it does to get a poster?

As with any artwork, canvas transfers should be kept out of direct sunlight. Unlike a print, you can clean the surface of varnished canvas transfers with mild soap & water or glass cleaner. With these basic precautions, your canvas transfer will last a lifetime.
