Items abandoned after Chernobyl disaster. Child's doll and gas mask, left abandoned in the city of Pripyat, in the Ukraine, following the nuclear disaster at the Chernobyl power plant in 1986. The disaster, an explosion and meltdown of one of the nuclear reactors, contaminated large areas of Europe with radioactive fallout, and required the surrounding areas to be evacuated. 50,000 people were evacuated from Pripyat alone. To speed up the process, the inhabitants were told the evacuation would be temporary and that they should leave their belongings behind. Twenty years later, the town remains abandoned, and it will be many years before it is safe to return. Photographed in December 2006. This photographic print is digitally printed on archival photographic paper resulting in vivid pure color and exceptional detail that is suitable for museum or gallery display
