Skeletons are a visual reminder of our mortality and may be used to represent that death isn't the end. Some of the world's most famous artists have painted skulls and skeletons. Take Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh's classic "Skull with Burning Cigarette," Edo era Japanese ukiyo-e artist Kuniyoshi Utagawa's "Mitsukuni Defying the Skeleton Spectre, c. 1845," and Jean-Michel Basquiat's "Riding with Death, 1988." The Mexican celebration, Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, offers colorfully painted skeletons, called calaca. Important examples of this artwork include pieces by famous Mexican political lithographer Jose Guadalupe Posada, such as his "Calavera from Oaxaca" and "Posada: Don Quijote." More modern and colorful examples of skeletons in art include Abril Andrade's "Guardian Angel" among others. Look for giclee prints and poster prints to bring skeleton artwork into your art collection.
